Residential Parking Amsterdam
Residential parking solutions for the city center
The situation for on-street residential parkers in Amsterdam is challenging. Long waiting periods to obtain a permit at all, and every day longtime searching for a parking space. To improve the situation in on-street parking, the city administration took an initiative: With view to the environment and for conserving the city, residents can now park their cars in selected parking garages in the city center during the night. To realize this concept for both on-street and off-street parking, the Dutch city cooperated with SKIDATA. City parking garages, such as Markenhoven, Piet Heijn, Stopera/Muziektheater and Willemspoort, are now equipped with SKIDATA solutions and are available to residents for nighttime parking.
Project Overview
At the garage’s entrance column, drivers with a parking permit present a ticket with a special barcode to gain automated access to the parking garage.
If parking time is exceeded, drivers can simply pay at the exit using the Tip & Go / Tap & Go methods (optional function).
Automated authorization and payment in the garages
Until now residents had to search an available on-street slot or they park outside the city and use public transport backwards. None of the two situations was ideal for neither the resident nor the city. Instead of searching for a space, the residents can park in some city parking garages. Using a parking ticket with special barcode, they can enter the garage for the night.
A time slot for residential parking was defined for the parking garages in the city. The inhabitants use the existing urban parking garages within the permitted time at reasonable prices. The city administration additionally has rented or bought parking spaces in parking garages to provide more parking slots during the night.
The system is based on a digital system allowing automated authorization and payment in the garages. Entry can be granted via payment or by permit. The payment or authorization request is sent to the payment service provider to obtain permission for access.
